The importance of team building to achieve scale - 09/10/14

Bailey Fisher Executive Search welcomed CEOs of ambitious technology companies to the latest in its series of CEO Dinners on 8 October in Cambridge.  The guest speaker was serial entrepreneur, advisor, investor and Chairman David Cleevely, who shared his insights on ‘The importance of team building to achieve scale’.

As a leader, David said that he had been coached in 8 key areas:

  • Accounting
  • Project management
  • Media training
  • Recruitment
  • Coaching
  • Presentation and sales skills
  • Negotiation skills
  • HR / Psychology

With regard to recruitment,  and the motivation and retention of your team, it is key to give employees a sense of purpose, let them be autonomous, and provide a clear line of sight of reward (not financial but so they can see that the impact of their actions is improving the whole).

David’s insightful talk prompted lively debate over dinner, chaired by Laurence Garrett, Partner at Highland Capital Partners.  Talk turned to a discussion of shareholders.  David’s advice is to have a portfolio of shareholders, who are committed to being with you for the long haul.  Understanding that the company/shareholder dynamic is a relationship is key. David cited Cambridge company Neul as an example of good practice, with regard to their relationships with VC and angel investors.
