Impacts of alternative capital for private and family-owned businesses - 10/10/18❰ Back
Bailey Fisher Executive Search welcomed leaders of private and family-owned businesses to the latest in its series of Private Markets Dinners at The Jockey Club Rooms in Newmarket recently, to discuss alternative sources of capital, with a focus on funding from family offices. Bailey Fisher’s Managing Director, Andrew Moore, hosted the dinner, in association with Richard Lane of Farrer & Co and Sian Steele of PwC UK.
The guest speaker was Francesca Dickinson of the Bronfman Family Office, which is involved in a diverse portfolio of investments with family-owned or entrepreneur-owned businesses globally. Francesca spoke about how family offices provide an alternative form of capital, which is often compared alongside bank debt, traditional private equity and strategic buyers, before highlighting the key business impacts of alternative capital:
- Takes minority equity investments – you remain firmly in control of your business with an expanded platform for growth;
- Never uses leverage to realise a return – the focus is on genuine revenue growth and margin expansion;
- Long term capital – there is complete flexibility to time an exit;
- Delaying exits can be beneficial to the valuation of your business.
The dinner was attended by leaders of privately owned businesses and family firms from Cambridgeshire and the Eastern region.
The Bronfman Family Office represents the interests of the Bronfman family and is involved in a diverse portfolio of investments, seeking to partner with and make minority investments in high quality businesses with strong market positions that are either family- or entrepreneur-owned, EBITDA between €5m and €50m. Bronfman are sector agnostic with a broad investment mandate that helps families or entrepreneurs take some liquidity out of their business whilst maintaining control with a hands-off partner. Bronfman are actively seeking investment opportunities in North America and Western/Northern Europe.
