Bailey Fisher Executive Search was delighted to welcome Edwina Dunn as guest speaker for the latest in the series of Women 4 Technology events, for female business leaders in the technology sector.

Edwina is Co-founder of Dunnhumby and creator of the Tesco Clubcard, an innovation that transformed Tesco, doubling its market share in little over a year, and changed retailing forever. Edwina’s innovation prompted the Chairman of Tesco at the time, Lord MacLaurin to comment “you know more about my customers after three months than I know after 30 years.” As CEO, Edwina led the growth of Dunnhumby from a team of 2 in 1989 to 2000 employees reaching 350m customers in 25 countries, before selling the company to Tesco in 2010. Edwina is now heading up a new venture, Starcount, which tracks the activity of 1.7bn people across the major global social networks. She has set up What I See, a not-for-profit aimed at broadening women’s career horizons and is Chair of Your Life, a government scheme to encourage more children to study STEM subjects.

Edwina identified three key points in leading a company through rapid growth:

  • Getting the right people is essential.  If you want great people, treat it like a campaign. Go after them, identify & address the barriers to them joining you.
  • Have a vision about what you are trying to achieve.  This is the difference between one person seeing what they are doing as digging stone versus another who envisions building a cathedral.
  • Be open and honest about the good times and the bad.  It is the journey that matters, and when you have collaborative leadership you have 10 great minds involved, not just one.

The event was kindly sponsored by Grant Thornton, Mills & Reeve and FieldHouse Associates, and was attended by 60 female business leaders in technology, including CEOs, CXOs, Founders, VPs, NEDs and investors.

The event was hosted in support of the national children’s charity, Dreams Come True.

Attendance at Women 4 Technology events is by invitation.  If you are interested in finding out more about future events, please contact Helen Poole at Bailey Fisher Executive Search.
